I keep our Plivo pricing page pinned to the official rate card, and this month's re-check flagged something worth an actual post: Plivo's US outbound SMS rate is no longer ~$0.0055 per message. It's ~$0.0077 — confirmed on Plivo's own pricing page, up 40% from what our own calculator had listed a few months back. Plivo's entire pitch against Twilio used to be "same API, meaningfully cheaper." I ran three real volume tiers through all three providers' current published rates to see if that pitch still holds.
Base outbound US SMS, long code, before any carrier surcharge or 10DLC campaign fees (all three providers add those on top, roughly comparable across the board): Twilio $0.0079, Vonage $0.0076, Plivo $0.0077 — up from ~$0.0055 earlier this year. Three providers that used to span a real price range now sit inside two-tenths of a cent of each other.

At this volume Plivo's old rate saved you $24/mo over Twilio — a real 30% discount, worth choosing on price alone. At the new rate it saves you $2/mo. Nobody picks a messaging vendor over $2 a month, so at this size the story is just: the reason you picked Plivo no longer applies, but it doesn't cost you anything to not notice.

Plivo's bill at this volume went from $550 to $770/mo — up $220, still 40%. That's the size where a "cheapest option" decision made six months ago and never revisited starts showing up as a real line item. Vonage is now $10/mo cheaper than Plivo at this tier; a provider nobody picked for price is now the actual cheapest one.

Plivo at this volume moved from $5,500/mo to $7,700/mo — up $2,200, still that same 40%. An account that switched to Plivo specifically to save money over Twilio is now paying $7,700 to Plivo's $7,900 from Twilio — a $200 saving that used to be $2,400. And Vonage, the provider that was never anyone's "cheap" pick, now beats Plivo outright by $100/mo at this scale, for the exact same volume.
It isn't total message volume — the percentage move is identical at every tier, 40% flat, because it's a straight per-message rate change with no tiered discount structure behind it. What decides your exposure is how long ago you picked your provider and priced it in. If you chose Plivo for its rate in the last few months and never re-ran the comparison, you're paying the new number without knowing the reason you switched no longer applies. The fix costs nothing: pull your actual monthly SMS volume from your provider dashboard and run it through all three current rates before renewing anything.
