Hugging Face Is Half Replicate's Price on A100 -- But the Gap Nearly Vanishes on H100

I was updating our abrazando la cara y Reproducir exactamente reference pages today and pulled both companies' current GPU pricing tables side by side for the first time. Same hardware -- same NVIDIA chips, same memory configs -- but two very different per-hour numbers. The surprise wasn't that they differ. It's that the size of the gap depends entirely on which GPU you pick.

The numbers, checked today

Hugging Face Inference Endpoints bill dedicated, autoscaling GPUs by the hour. Replicate bills by the second, converted here to an hourly-equivalent rate so the two are directly comparable:

GPUHugging Face $/hrReplicate $/hr equiv.Replicate premium
T4$0.50$0.81+62%
L40S$1.80$3.51+95%
A100 (80GB)$2.50$5.04+102%
H100$4.50$5.49+22%

On the three lower tiers, Replicate costs roughly double what the same chip costs on Hugging Face -- a 62-102% premium. Then on H100, the gap collapses to 22%. Whatever is driving the markup on T4 through A100 isn't driving it nearly as hard on H100.

We can see the pattern, not the reason

Neither company publishes its underlying GPU acquisition cost, so this is a correlation we can verify from the public price tables, not a mechanism either side has confirmed. One plausible read: H100 capacity is the scarcest, most contested tier right now, and when demand is tight relative to supply, there's less room for either platform to price a markup on top of what the hardware itself costs them -- both get pushed toward something closer to the floor. On T4 and A100, older and more abundant chips, there's more slack for a convenience premium to survive. That's a plausible story, not a confirmed one.

One tier Replicate doesn't sell at all

Hugging Face's table goes further than Replicate's: it lists H200 at $5.00/hr (1x) and B200 at $9.25/hr (1x) as selectable hardware. Replicate's public pricing page tops out at H100 -- no H200, no B200 row, as of this check. If a workload specifically needs either of those two chips, that's not a price comparison anymore; it's a one-sided option.

Why the cheaper number isn't automatically the right pick

These are both real, per-hour-equivalent numbers, but they come from different billing models. Replicate charges per second only while a model is actually executing and scales to zero with no standing instance to manage -- idle time costs nothing, full stop. Hugging Face Inference Endpoints also scale to zero, but you're provisioning a dedicated endpoint rather than calling a stateless function; the hourly rate applies whenever that endpoint is up and serving, which depends on how your autoscaling is configured. For bursty, low-volume traffic with long idle gaps, Replicate's higher per-second rate can still land cheaper in practice than these hourly-equivalent numbers suggest -- the comparison above assumes continuous use on both sides, which is the fair way to compare the rate but not necessarily your real bill.
