Token-math-only comparison. Subscriptions bundle browsing, image gen, voice and usage caps the API doesn't — this compares raw cost, not features.

The number that actually matters: your break-even message volume

Every "subscription vs API" comparison on the internet picks one usage level and declares a winner. That's backwards — the honest answer is a threshold, not a verdict. Below a certain number of messages per day, metered API pricing is cheaper because you're paying for exactly what you use. Above that threshold, a flat-fee subscription wins because you've saturated the value of the flat fee. This calculator solves for that exact crossover given your real input/output token sizes, instead of assuming a "typical" user that may not look like you.

The crossover point moves a lot with token size per message. Short back-and-forth chat messages (100-300 tokens) push the break-even far higher — you'd need hundreds of messages a day before a $20/mo plan loses to the API. Long, context-heavy messages (research questions with pasted documents, multi-thousand-token prompts) pull the break-even down fast, because each message costs meaningfully more on the metered side. If you regularly paste long documents or code into chat, re-run this with a realistic token count — "a message" is not a fixed unit of cost.

One honest caveat, same one every calculator like this has to make: this is token-math only. It ignores that ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Gemini Advanced bundle web browsing, image generation, file uploads, voice mode and (crucially) soft usage caps that reset instead of a metered bill you have to watch. The API wins on raw per-token cost at volume and on flexibility — any model, programmatic access — but "cheaper on paper" and "better for how you actually use it" are two different questions. If you're comparing subscription-scale agentic coding tools instead of chat, use the AI coding agent subscription calculator — that's a completely different token profile (400K-2M tokens per task vs a few hundred per chat message).
