For SMS, the three big programmable-messaging APIs look similar on the surface. The twist: the carrier fee baked into each message often matters more than the platform's own markup.
Twilio: the default, ~$0.0079/segment US outbound, huge ecosystem and docs.
Vonage (formerly Nexmo): competitive per-message rates, strong international coverage.
MessageBird (Bird): often cheaper in Europe, omnichannel focus.
Per-segment platform rates are within a fraction of a cent of each other. But each destination country (and sometimes carrier) adds its own surcharge, and these vary a lot between providers. So the only real comparison is per your destinations: price the exact countries you send to on each provider's calculator, not the headline US rate.
Start on Twilio for the docs and reliability. If your volume is high and concentrated in specific countries, get quotes from Vonage and MessageBird for those routes — the savings on carrier fees at scale can be real. And remember an SMS segment is 160 characters; long messages cost multiples.
