The free government address API is gone — three very different replacements

Until early 2026, USPS's Web Tools platform let any registered developer standardize and validate US addresses for free — no subscription, no per-call fee. That platform was fully retired on January 25, 2026, and the legacy free version of the Addresses API specifically stopped working on July 12, 2026. Its replacement moved to paid consumption pricing from August 1, 2026: $10 flat for the first 2,000 lookups in a month, then roughly $4.50 per 1,000 up to 10,000, $4.25 per 1,000 up to 50,000, and $4.00 per 1,000 beyond that — and you now need a signed license agreement before USPS issues credentials at all. The exact marginal-vs-bracket billing mechanics beyond the published rate bands aren't fully detailed by USPS; confirm directly before committing at scale.

Lob never had a perpetual free tier, but it never required paperwork either: the Entwickler rate is pure pay-as-you-go at $0.05/lookup with no subscription and no minimum, usable from your first API call. Start-up ($25/mo) includes 1,000 lookups then $0.025/extra; Wachstum ($450/mo) includes 50,000 then $0.009/extra — a conventional base-plus-overage SaaS shape that gets cheaper per lookup as you commit to a higher plan.

Smarty takes a third approach entirely: a 42-day free trial with 1,000 lookups and no card, then an annual Professional plan starting around $552/year (roughly $46/month) sized to one of several yearly lookup tiers (12K up to 2M lookups/year) — Smarty states explicitly that there's no overage on a depleted plan; you simply buy another block. Because Smarty's higher-volume tier prices aren't published in a simple table, the calculator above only shows its base reference rate — for a specific high-volume quote, Smarty's own sizing tool is the source of truth.
