How voice cloning / TTS pricing works

The thing most people get wrong: you are not billed for the clone. Creating a voice โ€” whether an instant clone (a few seconds of reference audio, ready in a minute) or a professional clone (a longer training set for higher fidelity) โ€” is bundled into your subscription. What you actually pay for is every character of text you later convert to speech with that voice. So the cost of "cloning your voice" is really the cost of the audio you generate afterwards, quoted per 1,000 characters and packaged into monthly tiers.

Because the unit is characters, not minutes, a bit of conversion is needed to reason about it. People speak around 150 words a minute, a word averages about 6 characters including spaces, so a minute of speech is roughly 900 characters. That is why minutes โ‰ˆ characters: an hour of narration is around 54,000 characters, and a plan quoted at "100,000 characters a month" is about 110 minutes โ€” under two hours โ€” of finished audio. This calculator does that conversion for you, whichever unit you have.

Tiers work like a phone plan: a flat monthly fee buys an included character allowance, and going over costs a per-character overage (roughly $0.15โ€“$0.30 per 1,000 characters, cheaper on bigger plans). The effective price per character therefore falls as you move up โ€” a low tier is cheapest at low volume but gets expensive on overage, so past a certain point the next tier up is simply cheaper overall. That break-even is the crossover point this tool highlights.

Reference plan tiers used here

Free โ€” $0/mo, ~10,000 characters (about 11 minutes), non-commercial, good for trying a clone.
Starter โ€” $5/mo, ~30,000 characters (~33 min); instant voice cloning unlocked.
Creator โ€” $22/mo, ~100,000 characters (~110 min); professional cloning, ~$0.30/1k over.
Pro โ€” $99/mo, ~500,000 characters (~9 hours); lower overage rate.
Scale โ€” $330/mo, ~2,000,000 characters (~37 hours); best per-character rate.

These are indicative figures to make the maths concrete โ€” ElevenLabs revises allowances and pricing regularly, so treat them as a starting point, not a quote.

How to use it

1. Enter your monthly volume and choose characters, words or minutes of speech.
2. The calculator converts everything to characters (the billing unit).
3. Read the recommended plan, its monthly cost and effective cost per 1,000 characters.
4. Check the crossover note to see when upgrading to the next tier saves money.

FAQ

How much does voice cloning cost?

Setting up the clone is free on a paid plan โ€” you pay per character of speech you generate. As reference estimates, an instant clone starts on ElevenLabs' Starter plan ($5/mo, ~30,000 characters) and professional cloning on Creator ($22/mo, ~100,000 characters). Beyond your allowance, characters run roughly $0.15โ€“$0.30 per 1,000 depending on tier. Confirm current pricing on ElevenLabs' page, as allowances change.

ElevenLabs pricing explained

Billing is per character, wrapped in monthly tiers: Free ~10k chars, Starter $5 (~30k), Creator $22 (~100k), Pro $99 (~500k), Scale $330 (~2M). Overage is roughly $0.15โ€“$0.30 per 1,000 characters and the effective per-character rate drops on bigger plans. All figures are reference estimates and change โ€” verify on the official pricing page.

What is the cost per minute of AI voice?

About 900 characters make a minute of speech. On a Creator plan (~$0.22 per 1,000 characters) that's roughly $0.20 per minute before overage; on Pro or Scale the per-minute cost is lower because the per-character rate falls. Enter minutes directly above and the calculator prices it for you.

Estimate only. Plan prices, character allowances and overage rates are reference estimates and change frequently โ€” confirm on ElevenLabs' pricing page. Exact allowances vary by promotion, annual billing and region.
