How voice cloning / TTS pricing works
The thing most people get wrong: you are not billed for the clone. Creating a voice — whether an instant clone (a few seconds of reference audio, ready in a minute) or a professional clone (a longer training set for higher fidelity) — is bundled into your subscription. What you actually pay for is every character of text you later convert to speech with that voice. So the cost of "cloning your voice" is really the cost of the audio you generate afterwards, quoted per 1,000 characters and packaged into monthly tiers.
Because the unit is characters, not minutes, a bit of conversion is needed to reason about it. People speak around 150 words a minute, a word averages about 6 characters including spaces, so a minute of speech is roughly 900 characters. That is why minutes ≈ characters: an hour of narration is around 54,000 characters, and a plan quoted at "100,000 characters a month" is about 110 minutes — under two hours — of finished audio. This calculator does that conversion for you, whichever unit you have.
Tiers work like a phone plan: a flat monthly fee buys an included character allowance, and going over costs a per-character overage (roughly $0.15–$0.30 per 1,000 characters, cheaper on bigger plans). The effective price per character therefore falls as you move up — a low tier is cheapest at low volume but gets expensive on overage, so past a certain point the next tier up is simply cheaper overall.
